Some of the ideas in these plans came from Brightly Beaming Resources. Each daily session of "School Time," as my son calls it will last about half an hour. Adjust the lessons for your child's age and level of education. Enjoy!

Number of the Week
Week 13: Lesson Plans
for the Letter M and the Number 13
Preparation:
·
Print out large letter and number sheets
(included) and post them somewhere the child can see them all week.
·
Create theme word flash cards with the theme
word on one side and a picture depicting the word on the other.
·
Print out the poem of the week (included).
·
Create a flashcard with the name of the composer
(or musical term) of the week on it.
·
Print out animal/plant word sheet (included), “facts
about” page (included), coloring page, and image of the animal/plant of the
week.
·
Print out social studies fact sheet (included)
and an image of the subject of the week.
·
Collect supplies for art project.
·
Optional: Plan a day for an outing in keeping
with the theme (ideas included) and buy ingredients for snacks, baking, or
cooking in keeping with the theme (ideas included).
Opening (Do this first every day.):
·
Introduce/Review the letter M: Show the child
the poster of the letter and make the sound you are teaching (choose one sound
to teach at a time).
o

o
Teach the child the sign (ASL) for the letter M.
·
Introduce/Review the theme words for the week:
o
mouse, monkey, moon, mountain, mirror, mother,
Optional: manners (a person’s behavior towards others), Optional: mano (Spanish
for “hand”)
o
Show the child the word while you say it.
Explain that the word starts with the letter M and help your child spell the
words if they are able. If not, just read the word, show them the picture on
the back and move on.

Read the letter M poem allowed, following along
with your finger on the paper/poster: “Little Miss Muffet”
·
Sing the letter M song with child: “She’ll Be
Coming Round the Mountain”
·
Introduce/Review the number 13: Show the child
the poster of the letter and say “thirteen.”
o
Count to 13.
o
Give the child 13 objects. Help them count the
objects.
o
Optional: Teach the child how to say 13 in
Spanish: trece
Monday (Language Arts Emphasis):
·
Give the child a tracing or coloring page for
the letter M. You can find books of these at the dollar store or Target. There
are also many resources online. If you don’t have a tracing/coloring page for
them. Just draw the letter M (upper and lower case) and help them trace it or
draw it on their own.

Read the child a book that has a lot of the letter
M in it. I always just go to my local library’s website and search for
children’s books that have titles starting with the letter M. Or I search for
books about the theme words. Any M book will do.

Ask the child to find the letter M in the title
and say the word with them, emphasizing the sound the letter makes in the word.
Tuesday (Math and Music Emphasis):

Give the child a tracing or coloring page for
the number 13. Again, you can find books like this at the dollar store or
Target (still for a dollar) or Google them and you can find some free
resources.

o
Use a calendar to teach the months of the year.
Review this throughout the week.
o
Watch the “12 Months of the Year” song with
child. Follow along on a calender.

Show the child your composer flashcard that says
“Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart” and explain that a man whose last name starts with “M”
wrote this song, called “Piano Concerto N. 21.” Play the song for the child.
Wednesday (Science Emphasis):
·
Show child the “M is for Manatee” page and the
image of a manatee.
·
Discuss the “Facts about Manatees” page.
·
Have your child color the manatee coloring page.
o
Put the finished coloring page in the book and
flip through the pages.
Thursday (Social Studies and Art Emphasis):
·
Show child the images of Mexico.
·
Discuss the “Facts about Mexico” page.
·
Art Project: Masks
o
Supplies: construction paper, scissors, markers
or crayons, string, hole puncher.
o
Make a mask of a monkey, moose, or mouse from
construction paper. Punch holes in the sides and tie the string through them to
wear the mask.
Friday (Physical Activity Emphasis):
·
Dance or march to music.
·
OR Go to the park and play on the monkey bars.
Outing Ideas:
·
Go to the mall.
·
Go to a museum.
·
Visit monkeys at the zoo.
·
Go to Disneyland and see Mickey Mouse!
Snack/Cooking/Baking Ideas:
·
milk, macaroni, muffins, marmalade, mangoes,
mushrooms
·
Make muffins with your child. Let them help you
pour the ingredients into the mixing bowl.
