Some of the ideas in these plans came from Brightly Beaming Resources. Each daily session of "School Time," as my son calls it will last about half an hour. Adjust the lessons for your child's age and level of education. Enjoy!

Week 14: Lesson Plans
for the Letter N and the Number 14
Preparation:
·
Print out large letter and number sheets
(included) and post them somewhere the child can see them all week.
·
Create theme word flash cards with the theme
word on one side and a picture depicting the word on the other.
·
Print out the poem of the week (included).
·
Create a flashcard with the name of the composer
(or musical term) of the week on it.
·
Print out animal/plant word sheet (included), “facts
about” page (included), coloring page, and image of the animal/plant of the
week.
·
Print out social studies fact sheet (included)
and an image of the subject of the week.
·
Collect supplies for art project.
·
Optional: Plan a day for an outing in keeping
with the theme (ideas included) and buy ingredients for snacks, baking, or
cooking in keeping with the theme (ideas included).
·
Introduce/Review the letter N: Show the child
the poster of the letter and make the sound you are teaching (choose one sound
to teach at a time).
o

Teach the child the sign (ASL) for the letter N.
·
Introduce/Review the theme words for the week:
o
nest, nurse, night, newspaper, numbers,
neighborhood, Optional: noise (sound), Optional: noche (Spanish for “night”)
o
Show the child the word while you say it.
Explain that the word starts with the letter N and help your child spell the
words if they are able. If not, just read the word, show them the picture on
the back and move on.
·
Read the letter N poem allowed, following along
with your finger on the paper/poster: “Jack Be Nimble”
·
Sing the letter N song with child: “Who Are The People
In Your Neighborhood”
·
Introduce/Review the number 14: Show the child
the poster of the letter and say “fourteen.”
o
Count to 14.
o
Give the child 14 objects. Help them count the
objects.
o
Optional: Teach the child how to say 14 in
Spanish: “catorce”
Monday (Language Arts Emphasis):
·
Give the child a tracing or coloring page for
the letter N. You can find books of these at the dollar store or Target. There
are also many resources online. If you don’t have a tracing/coloring page for
them. Just draw the letter N (upper and lower case) and help them trace it or
draw it on their own.

Read the child a book that has a lot of the
letter N in it. I always just go to my local library’s website and search for
children’s books that have titles starting with the letter N. Or I search for
books about the theme words. Any N book will do.

o
Ask the child to find the letter N in the title
and say the word with them, emphasizing the sound the letter makes in the word.
Tuesday (Math and Music Emphasis):
·
Give the child a tracing or coloring page for
the number 14. Again, you can find books like this at the dollar store or
Target (still for a dollar) or Google them and you can find some free
resources.

Math Lesson:
o
Nickel: Show child a nickel, explain how much it
is worth, and count money using nickels if the child is older enough.
o
Numbers: Explain that “numbers” starts with N
and count as high as you can with your child.

Show the child your music flashcard that says, “The
Nutcracker Suite” by Tchaikovsky. Ask your child to find the N in the title and
play the song for your child. This particular video is “March of the Toy
Soldiers.”
Wednesday (Science Emphasis):
·
Show child the “N is for Narwhal” page and the
image you printed out of a narwhal.
·
Discuss the “Facts about Narwhals” page.
·
Have your child color the narwhal coloring page.
o
Put the finished coloring page in the book and
flip through the pages.
Thursday (Social Studies and Art Emphasis):
·
Show child an image of a nurse (included).
·
Discuss the “Facts about Nurses” page
(included).
·
Art Project: Make a Necklace
o
Supplies: string or yarn, beads or Cheerios
o
String the Cheerios or beads onto the string or
yarn, tie around neck.
Friday (Physical Activity Emphasis):
·
Take a nature walk or explore your neighborhood.
·
Make some noise using instruments.
·
Write a letter to Santa at the North Pole and
take a trip to the post office to deliver it.
Outing Ideas:
·
Go to an arboretum or park and explore nature.
·
Go somewhere at nighttime (maybe to see holiday
lights).
Snack/Cooking/Baking Ideas:
·
Nectarines, nachos, noodles
·
Make nachos together or go pick nectarines if
you can.
